Community Journalism
There is no shortage of topics that people are passionate about nor stories that need to be told.
Our teams took on some of the hardest subjects—drug abuse, poor school performance, environmental injustice and more—to tell important stories too often neglected.
The Heroin Crisis
(Emmy Award Winner)
New Jersey is in the midst of a heroin crisis that affects every race, income level and geographic region of the state. Schools, police, healthcare organizations and others—including the Asbury Park Press—continue to tackle the problem and search for solutions. In 2017, the APP won an Emmy for the work and also partnered with WJLP-TV to continue aggressive coverage.
Summit for Success:
Improving Asbury Park Schools
(NABJ Award Winner)
Local schools are critical to the success of our communities. And no one knows that better than the residents and businesses located in Asbury Park, NJ. Our in-depth coverage of the Asbury Park Schools went beyond its failings. Instead, we partnered with the district, local residents, nonprofits and other stakeholders to pursue solutions, including the recruitment of an exceptional new superintendent.
Iron Soldier: Living with PTSD
(NJ Press Association Award)
Today's active duty soldiers and recent veterans face challenges unlike their Vietnam, Korean War, and World War II predecessors. In this moving package, we explored the harsh realities that face upon return to civilian life, and their desperate need for additional mental health, job placement and social services.

This deep dive, which won an EPA Award, served as the basis for Gov. Chris Christie’s plan to protect the ecosystem that makes it home along the Jersey Shore.
